Platycerium willinckii var. venosum came into cultivation as P. Mount Lewis. It was described as a variety of P. willinckii, but there is a lot of disagreement with that conclusion. This form needs more water and cooler temperatures than most staghorns. It is often ratty, especially in our very hot climate, but it can be spectacular. The shields on a well grown plant are impressive. The fertile fronds have pronounced veins on the underside.
