Platycerium andinum is the only staghorn native to the Americas.
Platycerium andinum is moderately difficult to grow. It grows high on trees in Peru, in areas which do not receive much rain.
The photo above, left, shows the spore patches on a young Platycerium andinum. This species is covered with white scales, giving it a silvery appearance. Platycerium andinum seems to do better in cool, dry climates, such as California. It can be grown in warmer climates, but watering needs to be controlled. Platycerium andinum does not like to be constantly wet. |
